Can I ride here?

Can I ride here? The answer for your machine, with its source

Pick your machine and the day you ride. HuntGrid Offroad shows each road and trail by what its official source says for that machine on that date, and a tap gives the rule, the dates and the source. When no source answers, it says Unknown.

HuntGrid Offroad on a computer: Forest Service trails in Chattahoochee National Forest, Georgia, shown for a 48-inch ATV, one of them tapped. Its card reads “Seasonal: open Apr 1 – Dec 31”, lists who may ride there with their dates, and shows the 2026 season with today marked.

Five answers, each with its reason

Every answer has an icon and a word as well as a colour, and a sentence that says why. A road is never shown as open just because nothing says it’s closed.

  • Open

The official source lists the route as open to your kind of machine on the date you picked.

  • Seasonal or limited

Open only between certain dates, or with a condition such as a width limit. The card gives the dates and the condition.

  • Closed

The source says the route isn’t open to your machine, or it’s out of season on that date.

  • Unknown

No official source we have rules on this route for your machine, so the card says so instead of guessing.

  • Unverified source

A source whose terms don’t yet let us use it fully is shown greyed and labelled “Unverified: check locally”, on the map only.

The route card on a phone, pulled up to half the screen: Trail 181E, “Seasonal: open Apr 1 – Dec 31”, open to your ATV until Dec 31, and its source, the USDA Forest Service’s Motor Vehicle Use Maps.

The route card

Tap a route for the rule, the dates and the source

The card starts with the answer for your machine and the reason in a sentence, like “Seasonal: open Apr 1 – Dec 31”. Pull it up for the rest.

  • Every class of vehicle the source rules on, each with its dates, and the classes it doesn’t cover marked as such.
  • A season strip of the twelve months, with the open dates for your machine and today marked.
  • The source’s name, licence, version and import date, and “Why this colour?” to explain the answer.
  • Set the map to today, this weekend or any date, and every route follows it.
  • Off a route, the card answers from the land’s official designation: a wilderness or no-motor area, a forest where only marked routes are open, or an open area. An open area counts as open only where the Bureau of Land Management manages the land itself; anywhere else it says Unknown.

Official maps and posted signs control.

Questions

Still have a question? Read the HuntGrid Offroad help pages or email support@huntgrid.net.

Where do the answers come from?

From official sources: the US Forest Service’s Motor Vehicle Use Maps, Bureau of Land Management travel routes and designations, and the open trail and road data of a growing list of states and provinces. Every route names its source and date. Coverage is partial.

Why does it say Unknown?

Because none of our official sources rules on that route or that piece of land for your machine. Unknown beats a wrong answer: look for signs and check with the land manager.

Does a different machine get a different answer?

Yes. The answer is for the machine you picked from your garage, with its width. The same trail can be open to a narrow ATV and closed to a wide side-by-side. Switch machines and the map redraws.

Is an open route a promise I can ride it?

No. It’s what the official data says for your machine on that date. Official maps and posted signs control, and closures can happen at any time.

Is it free?

Yes. Everything on this page is in the free plan, with no credit card. HuntGrid Offroad is in open beta, and there are never ads on the map or in Ride Mode.
