A free onX Hunt alternative
HuntGrid is a hunting map you can use for free: public and Crown land, hunting units, wind and scent, weather, seasons and offline maps for the US and Canada, with one price everywhere and no per-state add-ons. Here’s what you get, how to bring your pins over in a few minutes, and what HuntGrid doesn’t do yet.
What’s free in HuntGrid
The free plan has every map layer and tool. It’s limited by how much you store (3 offline areas, 100 MB of photos and voice notes, 3 groups of your own), not by state or feature, and its small ads never cover the map or show in Hunt Mode.
Public land, everywhere
Public land in all 50 states and Crown land across most of Canada, with access programs, parks and closures in one “Can I hunt here?” layer.
Hunting units
GMUs, WMUs and zones in most states and provinces, so you know which unit you’re standing in.
Offline maps
Download the places you hunt with topo, land, your pins and the forecast, and use them with no signal.
Wind and scent
A scent cone from any stand hour by hour, and Today ranks your stands by how well the wind fits each one.
Satellite and 3D
USGS aerial imagery across the US, provincial air photos in Ontario and New Brunswick, and 3D terrain.
Seasons and legal light
Season dates where they’ve been checked against the official regulations, legal shooting light and solunar times for any spot.
Switching
Move from onX or HuntStand in four steps
Export your pins
From the onX web map on a computer, select your waypoints, lines and tracks and export GPX or KML. From HuntStand, use the export or share option for your pins and areas.
Import them into HuntGrid
Create a free account and import the file from My maps. Stands, cameras and other common symbols are matched to HuntGrid’s icons. How importing works.
Download your areas
Pick up to three places you hunt and download them for offline use before you lose signal.
Put it on your phone
HuntGrid runs in the browser on iPhone, Android and computers, and installs to your home screen from there. How to install it.
What HuntGrid doesn’t do yet
Better you hear it here than find out in the woods.
US property lines
Parcel outlines are on the map in British Columbia, New Brunswick and Yukon. US parcel lines and landowner names aren’t live yet.
No app store app
HuntGrid installs from the browser for now, not from the App Store or Google Play.
Rules still being verified
Access rules and season dates show only after a person has checked them against the official regulations, so some places still say “not verified yet”.
onX, onX Hunt and HuntStand are trademarks of their owners. HuntGrid isn’t affiliated with them; their names are used only to describe switching. Check each app’s own site for its current plans and features.
Questions
Still have a question? Read the help pages or email support@huntgrid.net.
Is there a free alternative to onX Hunt?
Yes. HuntGrid’s free plan has every map layer: public and Crown land, hunting units, wind and scent, weather, satellite, seasons and offline maps for the US and Canada. The limits are on storage (3 offline areas, 100 MB of media), not on states or features.
Can I move my onX waypoints to HuntGrid?
Yes. Export them from the onX web map as GPX or KML, then import the file in HuntGrid from My maps. HuntStand and Garmin files work the same way.
Does HuntGrid charge per state?
No. The free plan covers every state and province, and the paid options planned for later will be one price for everywhere, never per-state add-ons.
Does HuntGrid show property lines?
In British Columbia, New Brunswick and Yukon, yes: parcel outlines from provincial open data. US parcel lines and landowner names aren’t live yet.
Does HuntGrid work in Canada and in French?
Yes. Crown land across most of Canada, provincial hunting zones, Environment Canada forecasts, and the whole app in English and Canadian French.
