Fishing without cell service
The waters worth fishing are often where the phone shows no bars. With a few minutes of setup at home, HuntGrid Fishing keeps your map, depths, spots and tides with you.

Your position doesn’t need a signal
GPS satellites send one-way signals, and the receiver in your phone only listens to them to work out where you are.[1] So the dot that shows where you are can keep working far from any cell tower. What needs a connection is everything else, the map included, which is why you download before you go.
Download before you leave
- A lake. On a lake’s Water card, Download this lake saves the lake and the land around it.
- A river. On a river, Download a stretch asks you to tap the other end of the stretch, then saves a corridor along the river between the two points, named after the river.
- Any area. On the Offline maps page you can draw your own.
Before anything downloads, the app shows the size of each map layer and of the data saved with the map, and checks that your phone has room. You need to be signed in to save an area.
What works offline
- The map with the layers you chose: the base map, terrain, and for surveyed lakes the depth shading and contours, plus access sites and hazards.
- Your spots and catches. Add, edit and log them with no signal; they sync when you’re back online.
- Tides and currents at the stations in your areas, worked out on your phone.
- The fishing regulations and stream access law cards for the places your areas cover, and searching their waters and access sites by name.
- Tools such as the Ice guide and Sun & moon.
What needs a connection
Live river gauges, buoys, weather and marine forecasts, and other anglers’ reports come from the internet, so they don’t update without a signal. A catch logged offline gets what the phone can work out at once, such as the solunar period and the tide from a saved station; the weather is added once it syncs.
Keep it fresh
Saved data refreshes on its own when you’re online and it’s due. The Offline maps page lists what each area holds (tides and currents, regulations, stream access law, search) and when each part was saved, so you can see how old it is before a trip.
When things go wrong
HuntGrid Fishing is not an emergency device, and with no signal a phone may not be able to call for help. Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back, and on big water carry a marine VHF radio or a personal locator beacon. More on offline lakes and rivers in the app.

Questions
Still have a question? Read the HuntGrid Fishing help pages or email support@huntgrid.net.
Does HuntGrid Fishing work without cell service?
Yes, for the areas you download: the map, lake depths, your spots and catches, tides and the saved regulations all work offline. Live readings and forecasts need a connection.
Does GPS work without cell service?
GPS satellites send one-way signals that your phone only receives, so finding your position doesn’t depend on a cell tower. Download the map before you go.
How do I download a lake?
Sign in, tap the lake and choose Download this lake on its Water card. The app shows the size before anything is saved.
