HuntScout vs HuntGrid

HuntScout and HuntGrid are both hunting maps for the US and Canada. HuntGrid is free with every layer, in English and Canadian French, and shows a season only once a person has checked it against the official rules. Here’s how the two compare, where HuntScout is ahead, and how to bring your waypoints over.

What HuntGrid gives you for free

  • Can I hunt here?

Public land in all 50 states, walk-in and access-program land in 36, and Crown land across most of Canada. When we can’t be sure, the answer is “unknown”, never green.

  • Seasons checked by a person

Season dates from the official regulations, each with its source, plus legal shooting light for any spot.

  • Wind, scent and weather

A scent cone from any stand hour by hour, thermals, live station wind, official forecasts, radar and alerts.

  • Who to ask

Signed in, the owner’s name on rural land in US states that publish it, only so you can ask permission. We never buy or scrape owner names.

  • Offline maps

Download up to three places you hunt with topo, land, your pins and the forecast, and use them with no signal.

  • One account, four apps

The same free account signs you in to HuntGrid Fishing, Offroad and Backcountry (beta), in English or French.

Where HuntScout is ahead

Better you hear it here than find out in the woods.

  • In both app stores

HuntScout installs from the App Store and Google Play. HuntGrid installs from the browser for now, on iPhone, Android and computers.

  • An AI assistant

HuntScout answers regulation questions with AI. HuntGrid has no assistant: it shows the rules a person has checked, with their source.

  • Parcel owners

HuntScout advertises parcel ownership. HuntGrid shows owner names only where a US state publishes them; elsewhere it points you to the assessor or land registry.

  • Australia and New Zealand

HuntScout has season pages for five Australian states and New Zealand. HuntGrid covers the US and Canada.

  • Units in most places, not all

HuntScout lists every US unit boundary. HuntGrid has units in most states and provinces and adds the rest one at a time.

  • Some seasons not verified yet

Season dates and access rules show only after a person has checked them, so some places still say “not verified yet”.

Switching

Move from HuntScout in four steps

  1. Save your waypoints

If HuntScout lets you share or export your waypoints as a GPX or KML file, save that file. If it doesn’t, jot down your key spots so you can drop them again.

  2. Import them into HuntGrid

Create a free account and import the file from My maps. GPX, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON and CSV all work. How importing works.

  3. Download your areas

Pick up to three places you hunt and download them for offline use before you lose signal.

  4. Put it on your phone

HuntGrid runs in the browser on iPhone, Android and computers, and installs to your home screen from there. How to install it.

HuntScout is a trademark of its owner. HuntGrid isn’t affiliated with it; the name is used only to describe switching and comparing. Check HuntScout’s own site for its current plans and features.

Questions

Still have a question? Read the help pages or email support@huntgrid.net.

Is there a free alternative to HuntScout?

Yes. HuntGrid’s free plan has every map layer: public and Crown land, walk-in land, hunting units, wind and scent, weather, seasons and offline maps for the US and Canada. The limits are on storage (3 offline areas, 100 MB of media), not on states or features.

Can I move my HuntScout waypoints to HuntGrid?

If HuntScout lets you share or export them as a GPX or KML file, yes: import the file in HuntGrid from My maps. Files from onX, HuntStand and Garmin work the same way.

Is HuntGrid in French?

Yes. The whole app, and this site, are in English and Canadian French. HuntScout’s App Store listing names English only.

Does HuntGrid show who owns private land?

Signed in, in US states that publish owner names: tap a rural parcel to see who to ask for permission. Elsewhere the card points you to the county assessor, and in Canada to the provincial land registry.

Is HuntGrid in the App Store or Google Play?

Not yet. HuntGrid runs in the browser on iPhone, Android and computers and installs to your home screen from there.
